Prof. David Mungai is a graduate of the University of Nairobi with BA in Geography (1976), MA in Geography (1984) and PhD in Agroforestry Meteorology (1993).
Prof. Mungai has worked as an Agricultural Research Officer in the Ministry of Agriculture (1977-185). He has also been a Visiting Research Scientist at the World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF), the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO), Division of Plant Industry, in Australia (Perth Laboratories) and at the Kenya National Cleaner Production Centre.
Prof. Mungai has served as the Chairman, Department of Geography and Environmental Studies, Chairman of the Technical Advisory Committee on Environmental Impact Assessment/Audit at the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), and a member of DFID’s Pathways to Environmental Action in Kenya (PEAK) Advisory Committee (2004-2006).
Prof. Mungai works closely with the Global Universities Partnership on Environment and Sustainability (GUPES), Habitat Partner Universities Initiative (HPUI) and Education for Sustainable Development in Africa (ESDA) Programme. He has coordinated the international development of an innovative Master of Science degree programme in Sustainable Urban Development which is being mounted at Nairobi and Kenyatta universities. Prof. Mungai has published widely in the fields of agricultural meteorology and ecohydrology. He is a NEMA-registered EIA/EA Lead Expert and has carried out numerous environmental impact assessments and audits covering a wide range of development sectors, nationally and in other countries.
